About the Province

Surigao del Norte is situated in the northern tip of Mindanao, bounded by the offshore islands of Dinagat on the north and Siargao on the northeast. As of 2000, the province recorded a population of 481,416, growing at a rate of 1.84 percent, the fastest in the CARAGA region in the last five years.

Along with Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Norte is listed in the top five poorest provinces in the country that are both located in CARAGA. In the 2000 National Statistical Coordination Board’s Philippine Poverty Statistics, the province ranked 23rd with a poverty incidence rate of 42.6 percent. In 2003, it climbed to number four with 54.5 percent or more than of its population living below the poverty line.

Surigao del Norte has a human development index value of 0.558, ranking 53rd among 79 provinces in 2000.
